Macy Blackman Music | HOME
Macy Blackman and the Mighty Fines were formed in 2003 basically by Macy Blackman and Bing Nathan. After Macy moved here in 2000 from NYC, he just sort of fell into the rhythm of playing at Enrico’s and other SF establishments too numerous to mention. One night, the original drummer, Jack Dorsey, said, “Hey, it’s starting to sound like a band.” So a saxophone was added and the New Orleans flavor of the band quickly began to manifest itself. THEN, in 2005 Katrina happened and Snakebite (Ken Jacobs) migrated here from New Orleans. He joined the band on tenor, and switched to baritone when Nancy Wright joined. This five piece line-up became the permanent form of the band and still is (with a few personnel changes). Andrew Jeager, a N.O. restaurateur of some note, also moved here and took over the Condor which became the band’s embryonic proving ground. It totally solidified the New Orleans character of the band. In 2010, the band made its first cd and added some more traditional sounds in the style of King Oliver. The Mighty Fines are a 1950’s style rock and roll band with a strong New Orleans flavor. Fats Domino, James Booker, Professor Longhair are the basics here, but you will also hear some classic r ’n b, Etta James and such. The Mighty Fines consist of Macy Blackman on piano, vocals, and trumpet, Bing Nathan on bass, Larry Vann on drums, Ken “Snakebite” Jacobs on reeds, and Mike Rinta on trombone. They have very slow turnover of personnel, so the band is tight.
